Whether we like it or not, the performances of the employees are constantly being scrutinized and benchmarked against their peers. And, unlike studying for a qualification, the goalposts in the workplace keep moving. This might be because of new technology, customer demand, legislation or simply because there is a new chief executive with a completely new vision. All these changes invariably put pressure on the employees to raise their performance level. Their knowledge and skills are almost always being gauged.   So how can you stay one step ahead? “What do you have in you” is the foremost thought in your employer’s mind whether current or prospective and staying marketable is being in control of your career by making yourself indispensable to your current employer or irresistible to a prospective one. You need to continually push yourself ahead and expand your skills and knowledge in order to stay up-to-date, competitive and in a strong position to compete for jobs in different market contexts.   In order to remain a highly skilled employee in a specific field you need to work on the professional development every year to strengthen your position. Whether this is a requirement or not, make sure you are up-to-date with what is happening in your field, or you could lose credibility and potentially expose your company to risks. With learning opportunities everywhere, continue to sharpen your skills by reading professional journals or trade press, attending industry events, conferences and workshops or do your own research.   You must keep a tab on the emerging markets and have a thorough understanding of the skills in demand to design your self-development plan. Educate yourself and invest in lifelong learning in order to successfully navigate your way through the pool of talent and creating your own space. Today’s companies are looking for leaders who can lead as well as inspire and be adept in managing teams and take the business forward. Know your skills well and be aware of your strengths to leave a footprint in the global market. Empower yourself!
